Sydney or Melbourne: Who does it better?

Some topics just should not be discussed in polite company: politics, religion, or whether Sydney or Melbourne is the better city. The rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne began in the 19th century, when gold was discovered near Melbourne, and their population quickly outpaced that of Sydney’s.

Of course, Sydney has caught up with and even surpassed Melbourne population-wise, and it is now the largest city in Australia. “The Economist” has ranked it as one of the top 10 most livable cities in the world.

Sydney has a pleasant climate, plenty of open spaces, easy access to waterways, and a number of gardens, including the Royal National Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Sydneysiders are a metropolitan people, hailing from such diverse locales as the United Kingdom, China, Italy, and India. Nearly a third were born overseas. Cultural diversity is celebrated through the Sydney Festival, the musical Big Day Out, and the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. The Sydney Opera House is one of the most distinctive and recognizable structures in the world.

That’s not to say Sydney is superior to Melbourne, however, and there are plenty of Melbournians who would be quick to point out their own city’s numerous highlights. Melbourne may be only the second largest city in Australia in terms of population, but its numbers are growing every year.

The climate is moderate and changeable, offering plenty of variety to those who become easily bored. Like Sydney, Melbourne has received the honor of being named one of “The Economist’s” most livable cities. Also like Sydney, Melbourne once hosted the summer Olympics, back in 1956. It has been said that iron sharpens iron, and if anything is obvious from a comparison of these two spectacular cities, it is that their friendly competition is only making each of them better and keeping them at the top of their game.

What About Brisbane?

When it comes to trips down under, all anyone seems to want to talk about are Sydney and Melbourne. Maybe they talk about "The Outback" (usually having no idea what the Australian Outback really is), but as far as Australian society goes, you'd think that all of Australia consists of just two large cities.

Well... what about Brisbane?

One of the chief advantages to travelling to Brisbane: less crowding. Brisbane doesn't get the same volume of tourism as Sydney or Melbourne, so you can enjoy a very authentic side of Australia. Aussies aren't the type to put on a show for visitors, but that doesn't mean that Sydney and Melbourne don't at least put a little effort into making their cities pretty tourist-friendly.

Brisbane, then, is for travelers, not tourists.

Brisbane is one of the most beautiful cities in Australia thanks in no small part to the Brisbane River, from which the city takes its name. The river cuts right through Brisbane, and if you're thinking that the name is ironic, like "The LA River", which is basically just a big drainage ditch, think again. The Brisbane River is pretty much the Mississippi of Queensland at 214 miles in length and around a hundred yards across at its narrowest. The sight of the natural landmark of the Brisbane River cutting right through the modern metropolitan setting of Brisbane is really something.

Brisbane was recently hit by a major flood, so any travelers heading to Australia may want to consider heading to Brisbane to support the efforts to rebuild the damaged residential areas. Besides being less crowded with tourists, less "touristy" overall and a brilliant mix of natural and man-made scenery, you can also feel good about yourself by traveling to Brisbane.

Of course, if you have the time and the means, you'd be crazy not to check out all three major Australian cities. Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne all offer something that the others don't, they all have their pros and cons, but ultimately, it's like comparing LA, New York and Seattle. If you're visiting America, you don't go to just one of these cities and declare yourself an expert on the nation. Every big city shows another side of its home country, and Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane present three major sides of Australia.

Down Under on the cheap!

Australia: so vast, so beautiful, so heartbreakingly expensive to get to. The allure of Australia's pristine beaches, exotic wildlife and cosmopolitan cities is well known, but the major obstacles in reaching them are those common vacation buzz-kills, time and money.

The shortest available flight from the US (LA to Sydney) is 14 hours long and can cost north of $1200, round trip. If you don't live in Los Angeles, go ahead and add on the time and expense of flying from your nearest airport. That’s a pretty hefty investment, in both time and cash.

Reducing the travel time is nearly impossible, but making the trip more affordable isn't complicated.

The most important cost factor in Australian airfare is season.

Since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, their winter is the Northern Hemishere summer. And because many people fly to Australia during summer to enjoy its beaches, prices are higher.

Travelling during their only slightly chillier winter reduces airfares and makes traditionally scorching excursions to the Outback, Queensland, and the tropical Northern Territory much more comfortable.

Accepting a longer flight can also significantly lower the ticket price. If a traveller is open to a four hour lay-over in Japan or a three hour stop-over in Singapore, ticket prices can plummet. Many budget travellers choose this option, and long-haul tickets are widely available.

Tourist visas to Australia are good for up to three months, but those interested in a longer stay in Australia can now apply for a Working Holiday Visa. The visa, introduced in 2007, allows travellers to stay in Australia for up to a year and even take temporary employment.

The Working Holiday Visa is only available to travellers under 30 years of age.

Darwin, named for the naturalist Charles Darwin, is the capital city of the Northern Territory of Australia. Compared to the other territories and cities of Australia, Northern Territory and Darwin are the least populated areas of Australia.

This multicultural city started as a pioneer outpost and has grown into the Australian gateway to Indonesia and East Timor. Its strategic location at the northern end of the Stuart Highway which runs to Port Augusta in South Australia, plus its natural harbour, are assets which lends to its leading industries of mining and tourism.

The Port of Darwin provides an excellent transport system between Australia and Asia while the Adelaide to Darwin railway enhances the import and export businesses throughout Australia.

Darwin is farther from Sydney and Melbourne than Jakarta and Singapore, which explains the multi-ethnic culture. Many Asian eateries and markets, Aboriginal centres of culture and commerce, and the many local business interests from night clubs to family-oriented amusements abound in Darwin.

Just as the scene on the promenade changes from moment to moment, so does the waterscape. The Old Parliament House was used for only a portion of the mid-twentieth century (1927 - 1988); however, through heroic efforts in historic preservation, it remains in existence even now, enhancing the view of the newer building. The Great Hall located inside and above ground is used for public events, including graduation ceremonies and weddings.

The enormous Australian flag that flies on an elevated spire above the building approximates half the size of a tennis court. The most recognizable symbol of the government, the flag and spire complex are visible from a great distance during daylight hours and are illuminated during the night. From above, the building itself looks like two boomerangs.

Melbourne contains some of the largest corporations in Australia. Both cities have A-league football (soccer) teams of which they are proud, but who perpetuate the competition.

Both metropolises have beaches, but Sydney’s are thought to be nicer. Each have a vast network of public transportation systems, but Melbourne’s are somehow easier to navigate and the city has the largest tram system in the world. Both are leaders in the fashion industry, but shoppers find more reasonably priced clothing in Melbourne, while women in Sydney are reportedly more body conscious.

The Battle of Australia: INXS vs Midnight Oil

During the mid- to late-1980s, two Australian bands made their way to the top of the charts across the world - INXS and Midnight Oil. The two bands are now seen as trailblazers for the rise of alternative music in the 1990s, and many bands point to them as influences on their sound. But who was better?

The music of both bands was remarkably similar - dance-driven rock that was energetic in nature. However, their lyrics were completely different. Midnight Oil sang about social and political issues; their big hit, "Beds are Burning," advocated the return of Australian land to its native people. INXS, though, wanted to seduce its listeners. With songs such as "Need You Tonight," "Never Tear Us Apart" and "Suicide Blonde," the band had other things on its mind besides politics.

Both bands had charismatic lead singers - Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett stood about six and a half feet tall, and his bald head made him look even more imposing. His voice, rough, eerie and menacing, brought even more bitterness and angst to its already supercharged lyrics. In contrast, INXS' Michael Hutchence was a cover boy. His long curly locks and pout enticed teenage girls, and his smoldering, masculine voice was the perfect delivery tool for the open, sometimes sexual nature of the band's songs.

But what about chart success? INXS boasts 10 Top 10 albums in Australia, three No. 1 albums, and 10 Top 10 singles. Midnight Oil sports similar stats: 12 Top 10 albums, five No. 1 albums, and four Top 10 hits. It's practically a toss-up.

In fact, it's difficult to find a clear winner. Both bands still have a strong following, but despite their similar sound, it's clear that they had different agendas. It may come down to personal taste. But it's hard to find two bands that represented Australia so well as INXS and Midnight Oil. They were the best of their time, and their music still sounds fresh and relevant.

Should Uluru be only for viewing or should the authorities allow visitors to have more access to it? Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is arguably Australia's most famous natural icon. Made of sandstone, the rock stands 348 meters high and has a circumference of 9.4 kilometers.

It rises out of the flat desert in the Australian Outback and is an awe-inspiring landmark. It is the most photographed natural phenomenon in the country. Apart from its unique shape, Uluru is famed for its remarkable changing of colours at certain times of the day. At sunset, the entire rock glows red. Rain does not fall often in this arid region but, when it does, Uluru becomes a silver-gray color.

The rock is steeped in Aboriginal history and still has an immense spiritual significance. The Aboriginals will not climb Uluru because of this. They have asked the government not to allow visitors to climb it, for two reasons. Firstly, one of the climbing paths crosses a sacred track. Secondly, because the land belongs to them, they feel responsible for the safety of climbers.

In 1983, the Australian government gave back the land title to the traditional owners but did not agree to forbid climbing. One of the conditions of the 99 year hand-back lease stated that Uluru could be climbed. The former landowners were obviously pleased to have the land back, but were disappointed about the climbing proviso.

Climbing Uluru has always been a popular activity for visitors. In 1964, a chain handhold was added. In 1976, this was extended to make the climb easier. Nevertheless, it is still a long, arduous 800 meter hike to the top.
In windy conditions, climbers could be in danger. People who suffered with vertigo or other medical problems, and those not fit, have always been warned not to attempt the climb. Since records were kept, 35 recreational climbers have died. In bad weather, the rock is extremely dangerous because of the slippery conditions.

The government imposed a ban on another popular activity at Ayers Rock. People used to organize champagne dinners at sunset to enjoy the changing colors of Uluru. The new law stated that alcohol was banned in any Aboriginal land in this area. Strangely enough, tour operators were exempt from this law. Therefore, those who want to enjoy a glass of champagne or wine will have to join a tour group.
In terms of a Draft Management Plan which was formulated in 2009, the Australian government has done an about-turn and now proposes that climbing be banned. Reasons included statements like 'Nobody is allowed to climb the Vatican' and 'You can't climb a Buddhist temple'. The government appealed to the Australian public to respect Uluru's religious significance.

When the draft was released, heated debates were sparked between politicians, traditional owners and tourists. Members of the public were also invited to comment. The climbing issue still remains unresolved. Regarding the alcohol issue, independent visitors may not consume alcohol, but those on tour buses are allowed to. Therefore the question 'Should Uluru be only for viewing' is still being asked.

When one is asking 'are the indigenous people of Australia the real Australians', one must also ask who are the real, or 'first' people on any continent. It is said, for example, that the original people coming to North America crossed the land mass at Alaska and were the first people on the land, but were they the 'real' American?. The American Indians, on the other hand, claim that they were the first people while, in reality, they were probably descendants from those original first people.

When trying to distinguish between real and original there is a problem. Of course, the indigenous (in old English meaning 'first or earliest known') were the Aboriginal people. They most certainly were real but were they the original people occupying the country?

Researchers say proof shows that the indigenous Australians ancestors showed up about 125,000 years ago. However, where did they come from and were there any others there before? It would appear that since there is proof of their presence over 100,000 years ago, this would make them true Australians.

Up until the first settlement in the 1700's it is known that these native people were occupying the land so they certainly have a claim to being the original natives. It was these settlers that named them 'Aboriginal', which, at that time meant, 'first or earliest known, indigenous". These Aboriginal people still live in Australia.

Most certainly, the Europeans, and others that came after, do not fit the idea of an original occupant of this great land. However, if a "real" Australian were to be defined, one could expand and say anyone born in the country is one. That it is their country by birth so they, also, are the real thing.

There is no doubt that the Aboriginal people were the first known people to occupy the continent, which makes them real Australians. However, as with the North America continent, there may have been other occupants back at the beginning of time. These indigenous people are real Australians by right of birth and by right of long term occupation, the same as those now living in any country who were born and raised there.
